What is a Mantra?

A mantra is a word of phrase that is repeated numerous times during meditation or prayer.

A mantra can be anything; it does not have to be super long, nor does it have to be in a language you don’t understand.

Mantras can be very powerful.

Why? Words have power. Mantras bring forth positive energy. When you truly believe what you are saying, the universe aligns to fit your requests.

Let’s think about this a little deeper.

Think of a time when you were in a rut, a time when nothing was going your way. Think about the language you were using at that time.

What we say and what we think, manifests in our lives. If we believe and say that things will never get better for us, that is exactly what will happen. You have more power than you know. Or maybe you do know! :D Great!

Just by changing what we say, directing our energy towards a positive outlook, our lives begin to shift. Maybe things don’t completely turn around right away but our perspective on life begins to change. That’s pretty powerful if you ask me.

Why is using a mantra important?

When I was reading up on mantras and there meanings, I read that they are capable of creating transformation. The most important thing is the intention behind those words. That’s where the transformation comes in. The words don’t have magical powers that work no matter what. You have to put some love behind what you are saying!

Lets say your mantra is “I can do great things.” Maybe you only believe it half way when you begin. That’s fine. But as you continue to tell yourself and the universe that you can in fact do great things, you may begin to believe it more and more. Perhaps you begin to take small steps to pursue things you may not have otherwise attempted to strive for. Maybe you push past some fear that has been keeping you from pursuing your dreams.

Are you starting to see why it’s important to have a mantra?

Mantras can enrich your life and give you that extra edge you need to go out and be spectacular in all you do. By reciting any mantra you evoke the qualities of the divine. Those same qualities reside within you.

A mantra can be anything we desire or need it to be at that present moment. You need to be able to feel the benefits of your mantra. If you are reciting something in Sanskrit, Pali, or any other language, and it does not resonate with you, change it.

Of course if Sanskrit mantras are your thing, stick with that! I like a little bit of both.

You aren’t cooler because you can recite the gayatri 108 times. Don’t let your practice become show and tell. I will be reminding you of this quite a bit here. If your spiritual practice is not your own how will you benefit from it?

I also recommend sticking with the same mantra for a while. Stick with it until you feel deep down within that it has served its purpose. If you move on later and you find you need it again, come back to it. Mantras are your tools. Don’t be afraid to use them.

I will be sharing with you a variety of different mantras over time. I hope that they will be useful for all of us on our journey. Feel free to share mantras that resonate with you as well. 

In short, it is important to have a mantra for a number of different reasons.

Use your mantra to remind you to be mindful.
To help you get through a rough time in your life.
To encourage you to have more love in your hearts for those you aren’t close to.
To encourage you to have love for yourself.
Use your mantra to help you feel empowered,
To brighten your day.
To remind you to live fully.
For world peace, for inner peace.
To show gratitude for all that you have.
To remember the divine that lies within.
To remember the divine that is all around you
To see the divine within everyone else.
