so I went for a walk to a place that I know. by Mithril |
Sometimes we have an all or nothing mentality... well I know I do.
"If I can't meditate for 30 minutes well I just won't meditate then!"
"If I don't finish this whole sequence then I'll just stop now."
"If I can't be mindful the whole day then I'll just give up and start over next week."
Maybe you can't meditate for 30 minutes but I'm sure you can do five. Can't do five? Then do one. Can't do one? Take a mindful breath. Then do it again in an hour...
It might be harder to take breaks in a yoga studio (more on this later!) but if you're doing a home practice you can certainly take a break. Get some water, dance for a little bit, or lie in child's pose for 10 minutes, and then get back to it. It's your practice. You can do whatever the hell you want.
Also, maybe you don't practice for a whole hour. Maybe you give yourself 10 minutes in the morning. Maybe you just practice breath work. Maybe you just do a few rounds of cat/cow before you sip your tea.
Pick one thing to be mindful about each day. Maybe today you will mindfully cut your veggies. Or maybe you will mindfully put on your shoes. Maybe next week you up the mindfulness exercise to two things to be absolutely present for...
The most important thing is that you show up. It's okay to start small. I think starting small is better. I strongly believe in gradually building up to where you want to be, while meeting yourself where you are right now. So start small. Take baby steps. Baby steps are not a sign of weakness. It's smart, and courageous- and when you do finally sit in meditation for 30 minutes, hopefully you feel awesome, and accomplished. And hopefully you thank yourself for taking it easy.
